Penning ion trap
From Mass Spectrometry Terms

| Penning ion trap |

|
Ion trapping device using a static magnetic field and a static electric potential well. The magnetic field confines the ion motion to circular orbits around the magnetic force line, which align the direction of the trap axis, whereas the electric potential well confines the ion motion axially. This device is used for the mass analyzer of Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometers. |

An ion trap that confines ions by placing them in a static magnetic field. Inside the field, the ions are subject to the Lorentz force which causes ions of a particular m/z to cyclotron at a specific frequency (cyclotron frequency). |
