It has been more than a decade since the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) made a recommendation on mass spectrometry nomenclature. In the subsequent years, the field has seen unprecedented growth both in use and scope. The need for a unified and widely accepted terminology is extremely important at this time. A project to update mass spectrometry terms and definitions has been commissioned by IUPAC and a task group set up to prepare a new document in conjunction with mass spectrometry journals, national mass spectrometry societies, and the International Mass Spectrometry Society. Here, we present a draft report of the project and solicit comments and suggestions regarding the terms and definitions to be included in the final report.
