Carbanion
Carbocation that has at least one important contributing structure containing a tervalent carbon atom with a vacant p-orbital. Common examples are even-electron hypovalent ions with the charge formally localized on a carbon atom, with general formula R1R2R3C+ where the R groups are any monovalent organic structure.


Note: In earlier literature, such ions were referred to as carbonium ions. Both types are collectively referred to as carbocations.
