DRAFT DEFINITION
Precursor ion
An ion that reacts to form particular product ions. The reaction could be unimolecular dissociation, an ion/molecule reaction, or involve simply isomerization (change in connectivity) or change in the number of charges. The older gender-specific term parent ion is not recommended.
Considered between 2004 and 2006 but not included in the 2006 PAC submission
This is an unofficial draft definition presented for information and comment.
