PROVISIONAL RECOMMENDATION
Precursor ion

Ion that reacts to form particular product ions. The reaction can be unimolecular dissociation, ion/molecule reaction, isomerization, or change in charge state.

The term parent ion is deprecated.

ORANGE BOOK DEFINITION
Precursor ion

Synonymous with parent ion. Instead of the use of parent ion and daughter ion terms the precursor and product ion terms are preferred respectively.
