Stevenson's rule
Rule stating that in competing fragmentations the product ion formed from its neutral species counterpart with the lower ionization energy will usually be the more abundant.
Note: The original version of this rule referred to reliability of determination of thermochemical data obtained for an ion produced by fragmentation of a single σ-bond in an odd- electron ion X-Y+•, but was later extended to the version in more common use since then.
