ORANGE BOOK DEFINITION

Tandem mass spectrometer

An instrumental arrangement in which ions are subjected to two or more sequential stages (which may be separated spatially or temporally) of analysis according to the mass/charge ratio. The study of ions by means of two stages of mass analysis is termed mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry MS/MS.

Tandem mass spectrometer

http://goldbook.iupac.org/T06250.html

An arrangement in which ions are subjected to two or more sequential stages of analysis (which may be separated spatially or temporally) according to the quotient mass/charge. A hybrid mass spectometer is an instrument which combines analysers of different types, e.g. magnetic plus electric sector combined with quadrupole. The study of ions involving two stages of mass analysis has been termed mass spectrometry/mass spectrometry.

ASMS TERMS AND DEFINITIONS POSTER ENTRY
Tandem mass spectrometer

Two-stage mass analysis experiment, used to study the chemistry of selected ions or individual components in mixtures.

Note from a reader: I despise "MS/MS spectra" -- Who has ever heard of an MS spectrum (a mass spectrometry spectrum). Prefer "tandem mass spectrum" or better "product ion spectrum" or "precursor ion spectrum". How do you handle a "metastable ion spectrum"--please don't sanction a "metastable spectrum".
